SUBJECT: 2019 Spring Carnival Details

 

Spring Carnival 2019, Planet Earth, is quickly approaching!  For more information and to see the ever-evolving schedule of events, visit the Spring Carnival website at www.springcarnival.org

 

As a result of the upcoming festivities, there will be changes in parking availability in the CFA Parking Lot, as well as some street closures and deliveries of equipment being loaded in.  All of this information is outlined in the various sections below and is inclusive of all Spring Carnival and Reunion Weekend activities.

 

CFA Parking Lot

  • Organizations will be plot chalking the parking lot starting today, April 2nd, from 8-10pm.
  • The CFA Parking Lot will be closed beginning on Wednesday, April 3rd, at 5pm until Monday, April 15th, at 8am to allow Spring Carnival Committee to prep for organizations to move their booths onto the parking lot on Friday April 5th. Any vehicles parked on or near the parking lot that interfere with Move-on will be towed.
  • Move-On, which is the day when organizations move their materials to their plot on CFA Parking Lot, is on Friday, April 5th, beginning at 6pm until 10pm. During this time, organizations will be driving trucks down Margaret Morrison Street onto the CFA Parking Lot, exiting campus between Hunt and Porter. Organizations will also be hand-carrying materials across campus.
  • Build Week, which is the period of time from move-on to opening ceremony when organizations construct booths, will be from Friday, April 5th, to Thursday April 11th.
    • Quiet hours will be in effect from 10pm-7am per city ordinance.
    • From 8am-6pm no large speakers will be permitted on site. Only small speakers will be permitted.
    • The students will be utilizing saws that will be located inside a sound dampening container that will have openings on each side. It will be placed on the North side of the parking lot near Margaret Morrison and will also be partially blocked by a row of booths.
    • The sidewalk closest to the Tennis Courts will be closed for the duration of Build Week and the actual Spring Carnival weekend. The sidewalk closest to CFA will be open and handicap accessible, with the CFA side door facing Posner as the handicap entrance. Signage will be placed accordingly.
    • The bicycle racks located on the sidewalk between the Tennis Courts and CFA Parking Lot will be temporarily relocated to a new location in conjunction with FMCS.
    • All wires, hoses, etc. that run across walkways will be covered by bridges to ensure safety.
  • Tear-Down, which is the period of time when organizations disassemble their booths and return items back to their storage locations, will be on Sunday, April 14th. Margaret Morrison and Tech Street traffic will be stopped intermittently between 8am-6pm to allow organizations to safely disassemble their structures and clear the CFA Parking Lot. CMU PD will be there throughout the day to help with traffic control.
  • CFA Parking Lot will reopen to permit holders on Monday April 15th.
  • All CFA Parking Lot permit holders will have access to park in the East Campus Garage. Your CMU ID card or parking card will provide you access to enter/exit the garage. This is in effect from Wednesday, April 3rd at 5pm until Monday, April 15th at 8am.

 

Traffic Restrictions

  • April 5th
    • Forbes Avenue and Morewood Avenue traffic will be stopped intermittently from 6pm-9:30pm to allow student groups to safely move their building materials to the CFA Parking Lot during Move-on.
  • April 12th – April 13th
    •  Margaret Morrison Street, Tech Street, Frew Street, Circuit Road, and Schenley Drive (including Panther Hollow & Schenley Bridges) will all be closed to through traffic from 5am until 2pm for Buggy races. On both of these days, parking will be restricted starting at 5am until after the races have finished on Tech Street, Schenley Drive, and Frew Streets. Any vehicles parked on Tech Street, Frew Street, and Schenley Drive will be towed. In the event that both Friday and Saturday races are cancelled due to weather, races will occur on Sunday, April 14th from 5am until 2pm.
  • April 14th
    • Margaret Morrison Street and Tech Street traffic will be stopped intermittently from 8am to 6pm to allow student groups to safely disassemble their structures and clear the CFA Parking Lot.

 

Building Restrictions & Access

  • Signs will be posted around CFA Parking Lot and the CFA lawn to publicize which buildings are accessible and to direct people to the nearest restrooms.
  • CFA Building Access:
    • Friday, April 5th – Thursday April, 11th – all doors besides the main entrance of CFA will be exit only. The main entrance will be operating on a normal schedule.
    • Thursday, April 11th – Saturday, April 13th – all doors besides the main entrance of CFA are still exit only. The main entrance will be coded to be CMU ID card access only.
    • Spring Carnival Committee will be placing signage on CFA Doors.

 

CFA Lawn, The Mall, and The Cut

  • The Spring Carnival Committee Office Trailer, EMS Trailer, and Restroom Trailer will be delivered on Friday, April 5th, before 8am.
  • 4 amusement rides will be delivered overnight on Saturday, April 6th, into Sunday, April 7th, and will be stored on The Mall.
  • The remaining amusement rides will be delivered and set up overnight between 10pm on Monday, April 8th, and 6am on Tuesday, April 9th. They will be accessing campus between Hunt and Porter and will have Spring Carnival Committee representatives on site.
  • Tents will start to be set up on the grass area in front of the Fence on Monday, April 8th.
  • Tents will be taken down by Tuesday, April 16th.
  • Food trucks will be on campus on Saturday, April 13th from 11am-2pm, with trucks lined up on Margaret Morrison to go onto East/West Walkway by 10am (security escort has been requested).

 

Midway Stage (tennis court amphitheater) & Entertainment

  • The Midway Stage will be delivered and set up starting at 9am on Tuesday, April 9th. Hughie’s company representatives will be on site with FMCS, Spring Carnival Committee and AB Tech members.
  • Entertainment on the Midway Stage will take place periodically throughout the weekend within the below “Rides Hours of Operation.” Below are some confirmed entertainment acts. A full schedule can be found online at www.springcarnival.org. As a note, the Activities Board Comedy Show (Thursday April 11th) and Concert (Saturday April 13th) will both be held indoors this year.
    • Thursday April 11th
      • 3pm: Opening Ceremony begins at the Spring Carnival Entranceway outside the Cohon Center on the way to the Fence. The Pipe & Drum will process and Kiltie Band will perform directly after in Kirr Commons.
    • Friday April 12th
      • 7-8pm: Alumni Association 90’s Cover Band
      • 8-10pm: Spring Carnival Committee’s “Tartans Got Talent” Show
    • Saturday April 13th
      • 4-5:30pm: Booth & Buggy Awards Ceremony
  • The Midway Stage will be disassembled starting at 9am on Sunday April 14th. Hughie’s company representatives will be on site with Spring Carnival Committee members.
