SUBJECT:  Power Shutdown Affecting Multiple Locations – 12/19 5AM-8AM

A 3-hour power outage has been scheduled for Thursday, 12/19, from 5:00AM – 8:00AM in order to restore the normal configuration of the electrical distribution serving buildings on the east side of campus.

There was a meeting on 10/11 with building representatives to discuss possible dates for this outage, with the recommendation to complete the work as soon as possible.

During the meeting, FMS described the following risks associated with the current configuration:

·         There are two circuits serving the group of buildings listed below.  If either circuit has an issue there will be an extended, unscheduled power outage.

o   College of Fine Arts

o   Hall of the Arts (GSIA)

o   Housing along Margaret Morrison Street

o   Hunt Library

o   Margaret Morrison Carnegie Hall

o   Posner Center

o   Skibo Gym

·         If there is an issue with the circuit powering Posner Hall and Posner Center, the time to restore power to Posner Hall and Posner Center is at least 8 hours.  Other buildings will not be affected.

·         If there is an issue with the circuit powering Housing along Margaret Morrison Street, CFA, Hunt Library, Margaret Morrison Carnegie Hall, and Skibo Gym, the time to restore power is at least 8 hours. Posner Hall and Posner Center will also experience a loss of power.

·         There may be no advance notice of the power outage and the buildings will be closed for all uses.  If the power is off for an extended period during cold weather, the interior conditions may require additional time to establish normal temperatures.

These risks were communicated to the building representatives joining the coordination meeting on Friday, 10/11.  They acknowledged the risks and recommended the date of December 19th for the scheduled outage.

SUBJECT:  Power Shutdown Discussion Meeting Tomorrow 10/11

A planned power shutdown occurred in August to align power services to the buildings listed below as a part of the Posner Hall and Hall of the Arts construction project.  We now need to schedule a 2-3 hour full power shutdown in order to restore normal power to those same buildings.  A meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, 10/11, at 11:00AM in the in the FMCS 2nd Floor Conference Room to discuss details of this shutdown.

The intent of the meeting is to solicit input on the potential impacts to critical equipment that would be affected and determine a date/time that avoids or minimizes the most negative effects.

Please send an email to Shannon Wetzel at swetzel@andrew.cmu.edu if you plan to attend this meeting.
