Facilities, Infrastructure and Risk Management (FIRM)

Facilities Management & Campus Services

TO:  Shutdown Group, Facility Coordinators

FROM:  Service Response Center

SUBJECT: Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences (RKM) Site Work Beginning 3/25

Beginning Monday, 3/25, site work will begin at the location of the future Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences (RKM).

Contractors will begin erecting site fencing and jersey barriers along the perimeter of the site.  For details, see the attached Site Logistics Plan.

In addition, traffic patterns, both pedestrian and vehicular, will be temporarily changing in the Forbes Ave. / Craig St. area to accommodate construction for RKM. The following changes will remain in effect until project completion in the fall of 2027:

· Vehicles turning left into the Carnegie Museums’ parking garage from westbound Forbes Ave. (leaving CMU’s main campus) will need to turn from the main traffic lane. The left turn lane will be closed.

· Vehicles turning right onto eastbound Forbes Ave. when exiting the Carnegie Museums’ garage may need to turn from the main traffic lane. The right turn lane will experience periodic closures throughout the project.

· All pedestrians crossing the Forbes Ave. bridge will need to use the sidewalk on the north side of the street (connecting TCS Hall and the Tepper Quad). The southern sidewalk will be closed between Craig Street and the Mehrabian Collaborative Innovation Center.

· Vehicle and bike lanes will remain open on Forbes in both directions throughout the project, as will the sidewalk on the north side of the Forbes Ave. bridge.

These changes will not impact CMU's current shuttle routes. Traffic-flow improvements will also be considered post-construction to help make this area safe and efficient for pedestrians, bicyclists, and bus and shuttle riders.

Traffic updates will be posted to CMU's Transportation Services website as they become available. To learn more about the Richard King Mellon Hall of Sciences, visit the University’s Campus Design and Facility Development website.
