SUBJECT: Housing Fire & Evacuation Drills 9/22 3PM-7PM

To demonstrate compliance with the fire code and to ensure emergency preparedness, Environmental Health and
Safety (EHS) will be conducting a fire evacuation drill for all housing buildings on Monday, September 22, 2025.
The drills will begin around 3:00 pm and finish around 7:00 pm. If the drills needs to be canceled for any reason,
the tentative makeup date is Tuesday, September 23, 2025 beginning around 3:00 pm. Notice of the need to use a
makeup date will be provided as soon as possible after cancelation of the original date.
During the fire evacuation drills, you will hear a siren/horn and/or voice command announcement to evacuate.
We ask for your full cooperation during the drills. The expected duration of each drill will be approximately 10 – 15
minutes. We recognize the drills may interrupt your schedule and we apologize for any inconvenience this may
cause.
Please adhere to the following directions when the fire alarm sounds to safely evacuate the building:
• Never ignore a fire alarm.
• If a fire alarm sounds, evacuate immediately in a safe and orderly manner – do not run.
• If it is safe to do so, shut-off any equipment that you may be using, gather your personal belongings
(i.e., keys, purses, bag) and then proceed to the nearest exit.
• Utilize the stairs to evacuate, never an elevator.
• When exiting, report to your designated assembly area or to a safe point that is away from the building
and out of the path of emergency responders.
• Do not re-enter the building until given the “all clear” to return inside by EHS personnel.
• If physical assistance is needed to evacuate, shelter-in-place or go to an enclosed stairwell. Tell
someone of your location and ask them to notify the EHS personnel conducting the drill. If you are not
sure if the fire alarm is a drill – Call the university police at 412-268-2323 and tell them of your location
and situation.
