SUBJECT:  Scotty Goes Green for Winter Break

The upcoming Winter Break provides an opportunity for you to make a meaningful contribution to our campus ‘Scotty Goes Green’ initiative.  For the 11 days that the University is officially closed, (Dec. 23 – Jan. 2), we are asking for your support of thoughtful actions to reduce unnecessary energy consumption and minimize waste. Overall, we hope to measure the results from all of our efforts and report which buildings made the greatest impact for ‘Scotty Goes Green’.

Here is how you can help now – Let us know if your department or building will be closed for Winter Break.  We will be targeting our ‘Scotty Goes Green’ initiative in areas that have the ability to reduce unnecessary energy consumption.  If we don’t hear from you, we will assume your department will be not be able to participate and your spaces will remain at ‘normal business’ levels.   For those that join the effort, we will share your department’s Scotty Goes Green story on the Green Practices website.

Even if your department will not be able to participate, you can still help minimize waste.  Before leaving for Winter Break, please support the effort with the following actions:

·         Close and lock all windows;

·         Turn off all computers, printers, speakers, etc.;

·         Unplug any items that can be unplugged without causing damage to the item.  For example, chargers, fans, clocks, small kitchen appliances;

·         Unplug and clean out small personal refrigerators.  Be sure to place old newspaper or a towel under the fridge and prop the door open to prevent leaking;

·         Unplug your office appliances – like copiers and printers;

·         Adjust thermostats to a lower temperature – but don’t turn your heat OFF;

·         Turn off lights, including holiday lights;

·         Lower your fume hood sash to the minimum position.  Turn off any unnecessary general exhaust.

Thank you for supporting ‘Scotty Goes Green’ for Winter Break!
