SUBJECT: Signaling and Infrastructure Upgrades on Fifth and Morewood
CDFD is pleased to announce the start of the next phase of the project to increase safety in the Fifth and Morewood Avenue area. The university has been partnering with the City of Pittsburgh's Division of Mobility and Infrastructure to implement signaling and infrastructure upgrades.
The City's preparatory work for the installation of new signal poles will begin by the end of March. The campus community should anticipate rotating single lane closures by the City's contractor during the process.
Other work to be implemented in the summer months include an expansion of the sidewalk area in front of Mudge House, the installation of two bike ramps to support safer cyclist movements, and new sidewalk and roadway markings. These improvements will build upon the joint work of the City of Pittsburgh and CMU in 2024 to repave Morewood Avenue, paint new bike lanes from Fifth to Forbes, and expand the Fifth Avenue sidewalk adjacent to Mudge House.
Final installation of poles and implementation of new signaling will not take place until after the Parkway East/Commercial Street Bridge detour is complete in early August.
